Welcome
Three minutes to get to know the book before you start: how to leave a comment, and how the book is built.
Comments: you are helping to write this book
This is a beta version. The book is still being written and checked, and I read every comment. A mistake in a calculation, a sentence that is not clear, an example you could not reproduce in the software, an idea for a question or a lab: every comment like this helps make the book better.
How to leave a comment
- Under every heading in a chapter there is a ✎ Comment button. Click it to comment on that section. At the end of every chapter there is also a "Leave a comment" button for the whole chapter.
- Want to comment on a particular word or sentence? Select it with the mouse before you click, and the selected text will be attached to your comment.
- Choose the kind of comment (a mistake, something unclear, a suggestion, or other), write it in your own words, and click "Send".
Only you and I can see your comment. If needed, I will get back to you.
How the book is built
- Choose your software. In the top bar of every chapter, choose Excel, SPSS, JASP or R, and all the demonstrations in the book switch to your choice. The book was built with SPSS version 31.0.2.0, JASP version 0.98.8 and R version 4.5.2. New versions come out all the time, so your menus and output may look a little different. The ideas and the numbers stay the same.
- Choose your depth. "Level 1" (in brief) for a quick review, "Level 2" (the explanation) for ordinary reading, and "Level 3" (in depth, the full story) for anyone who wants to understand all the way. You can switch in the middle of a chapter, too.
- Make it look the way you like. In the ⚙ gear in the corner you choose the look (calm or bold), the language and the text size.
- Click on words. A term with a dotted line under it opens a definition, in any of the book's languages. A colored symbol, like M or SD, can be clicked too, and explains itself.
- Check yourself. Along the chapter there are "Check yourself" boxes. Open one, answer, and click "Check the answer" to see the solution, including the calculation. The calculations by hand are folded too, and open with a click.
- Play in the labs. Inside the chapters there are interactive labs: move a slider, change the data, and see what happens. They are all collected on the labs page too. In the top corner of every lab there are two buttons. "⛶ Full screen" opens the lab on its own, on the whole screen. The second button switches between "⤡ Fit to screen", where the lab is shrunk a little so all of it fits on one screen, and "⤢ Full size", its normal size. On a computer there is also a "🔍 Magnifier": when it is on, the part of the lab under the mouse is enlarged, so it is easy to read. In full screen the whole lab is enlarged, if there is room.
The data files for practice
The whole book works on one study: a program for social and emotional care in schools. The data are simulated, but they are built like real data: 200 students and dozens of variables (for example siblings, the number of brothers and sisters). In every chapter, in the "Practice with the data" section, there are buttons to download the files. You can also download them from here:
⬇ The study file (care_school.csv) ⬇ The codebook ⬇ The follow-up file
CSV files open directly in Excel, JASP, SPSS and R. The codebook explains what is in each column.
